Project Jukebox to add "Sea Ice in Barrow" based on traditional knowledge

Project Jukebox, the digital branch of the Oral History Program [http://jukebox.uaf.edu/site7/project/532] at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, has received a grant from the North Pacific Research Board to create a new multimedia segment, “Sea Ice in Barrow.” The $61,205 grant will allow staff from UAF’s Elmer E. Rasmuson Library to record interviews in the Barrow area, and to transcribe exisiting interviews conducted by other researchers.

Panel to discuss oral history project involving Boeing Wichita

A discussion of an oral history project on Boeing Wichita will be held Friday night at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum. The “Boeing Wichita Oral History Project” features hours of videotape from 21 people ranging from politicians, Boeing employees and others in the community affected by the plant’s closure in a city that has long defined itself the Air Capital of the World. Friday night’s presentation will be a discussion of how the project came about and what was learned in the process. “We approached this from the standpoint: ‘What were the questions you might wonder about? Who are the people you are most interested in hearing from?’ ” said Eric Cale, director of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum.

Oral history archive launched online

In order to perpetuate the memory of World War Two, in 2012 the French national railway company (SNCF) asked its former employees and their families to share their recollections of the period. Known for its xperience in collecting life histories, the French Railway Historical Society (AHICF) was commissioned by the SNCF to carry out an oral history project, taking as its starting point an appeal for witnesses published across France between January and December 2012. This appeal has been a real success. 700 people responded and by its deadline, on the 31st of December 2012, we had planned more than 200 interviews.

Wisconsin Veterans Museum telling history of wars, one story at a time

Madison — Adam Holton's memories of Iraq are still fresh, even though it's been nine years since he served as commander of a Marine Reserves company. He vividly remembers the days during Golf Company's 2004-'05 Iraq deployment when five of his Marines were mortally wounded, and he recalls the tedium and excitement of living in a war zone. Holton wanted his memories, and those of his men, preserved for posterity. Because as long as he remembers his five fallen comrades, others will, too. "Keeping their memories alive is really important to us," Holton said.

Iran’s Culture Minster to pen memories

The Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Mohammad Husseini, has said he will write down his memories and compile some of his speeches in a book. IBNA: Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony held at Bagh Ziba Garden in Tehran to celebrate the day of Pen on Saturday, July 6, 2013, Husseini said he has plans to write his memories and speeches at almost all of the congresses, cultural events and festivals he attended during his term in office as Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

Memoir of Albert Camus by Jean Grenier

IBNA: Entitled ‘Albert Camus – Souvenirs’, the book holds the memoir of Camus according to Jean Grenier. Bogheiri said that the world knows Camus for his philosophical works however only a few know who brought him into philosophy. Jean Grenier is a renowned figure in France but he is still unknown in Iran.

Hajj Pilgrimage

I went on a Hajj pilgrimage in the early 1340s (1960s). At that time, few people from the army, gendarmerie and police went on a pilgrimage to the holy Mashhad and holy shrines in Iraq. It happened very rarely. After all, there were faithful people in the Iranian army who were committed to obeying the Islamic halal and haram rules in any situation, and they used to pray.
