County Fair’s oral history event brings out young and old

Hundreds of people headed to the Winona County Fair on Thursday to enjoy the spectacles and entertainment — and to revisit memories with friends and family. Attendees Thursday had a chance to share stories of previous years at the fair during Winona County Historical Society’s “I Remember When,” an ongoing oral history series the society is sponsoring. Fair president Cindy Timm, who has gone to the fair since she was a kid, recalled when a monkey got loose from the petting zoo on two separate occasions in 1998 and 2004. The story made the front page of the Daily News, as well as USA Today and other national papers, Timm said. “The best way to promote the fair is let a monkey loose on the fairgrounds,” she joked as she shared the story to an audience of about 20.

Iran’s Saei to release complete biography

Holloway memoir wins PEN/Ackerley Prize

Richard Holloway's Leaving Alexandria: A Memoir of Faith and Doubt (Canongate) has won the PEN/Ackerley Prize 2013. IBNA: Holloway's book, which describes his struggle with faith, beat off competition from Will Cohu, Rachel Cusk and Colin Grant, Bookseller said. The PEN/Ackerley Prize is the only British literary prize dedicated to memoir and autobiography. It was founded in memory of editor and author J R Ackerley, and was first awarded in 1982. The winner receives a cheque for £2,500.

University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky is making strides to preserve oral history with a system that allows interviews to be heard online before they are transcribed. The Oral History Metadata Synchronizer, developed at UK in 2008, is the only one in the country, said Doug Boyd, director of the Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at UK's Special Collections.

Hajj Pilgrimage

I went on a Hajj pilgrimage in the early 1340s (1960s). At that time, few people from the army, gendarmerie and police went on a pilgrimage to the holy Mashhad and holy shrines in Iraq. It happened very rarely. After all, there were faithful people in the Iranian army who were committed to obeying the Islamic halal and haram rules in any situation, and they used to pray.
