Summer Oral History Field School in Egypt

A course abroad this summer of possible interest:

Students are invited to participate in the second annual summer oral
history field school in Egypt from May 20-June 9.
Students will learn about modern Egypt through hands on oral history work.
The three week study tour includes daily
classes as well as visits to Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria, the western desert,
and the Red Sea.

Cost: $3817 (airfare not included), financial aid possible
Students will receive 4 credits (including 3 history credits and 1 credit
of service learning)

The trip itinerary is as follows:

5/20 (Mon):

• Arrive in Cairo, meet and assist at Cairo Airport, and transfer to your
hotel.

• Overnight in Cairo.

5/21 (Tue): Topic: What is Oral History

• 08.30 Drive to Tahrir Sqare.

• 09.00 Visit Cairo Museum.

• 12.00 Back to the hotel.

• 16.30 Discussion at the hotel.

• 18.30 Dinner (Sequia Restaurant in Zamalek).

• Overnight in Cairo.

5/22 (Wed): Topic: Oral History Approach/Theory

• 08.00 Drive to Giza

• 09.00 Start the tour of Giza Pyramids & Sphinx.

• 12.00 Tour of Wissa Wassef.

5/23 (Thu): Topic: Modern Egyptian History

• 09.00 Drive to Islamic Cairo.

• 09.30 Tour to Citadel, Sultan Hassan, Refai, Inb Tulun Mosques. Visit
Mamluk e House; Beit Koson , (including Seuk)

• 16.30 Discussion at Azhar Park.

• 18.30 Dinner (Al‐Azhar Park).

• 09.00 Tour of Nilometer / Umm Khalthum Museum.

• 11.30 Tour Coptic Cairo.

5/25 (Sat): Topic: Economics and Worker Rights

• 08.00 Check-out and transfer to Alexandria.

• Visit the Bibliotiqua Alexandrina & Roman Amphitheatre. (Including Fish
Market lunch).

5/26 (Sun): Topic: Youth

• 09.00 Alexandria Tour: Catacombs, Pompy Pillar and Citadel.

• Transfer back to Cairo.

• 17.30 Discussion at the hotel.

5/27 (Mon): Topic: Animal Rights and Welfare

• 07.30 Over day desert trip to Wadi Hitan.

• Overnight in Cairo.

5/28 (Tue): Topic: Social Media

• 09.00 Tour of APE in Trash City. Visit to the school run by APE.

Luxor.

• Flight to Sharm el Sheikh via Cairo.

• 16.00 Afternoon transfer to St. Catherine.

• Dinner and sleep for a few hours at St. Catherine Monastery Guest House.

• 01.30 Early morning climb the mountain.

• 08.00 Breakfast and visit the Monastery of St. Catherine.

• Noon transfer back to Cairo.
