Iranian, Omani heads of archive centers meet

Head of the National Library and Archives Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran Eshash Salahi met with his Omani counterpart Ahmad ibn al-Dhoyani, and voiced Iran’s readiness to publish books from Iran and Oman National Archives and provide services for digitalization of documents.
IBNA: Head of the National Library and Archives Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran Salahi met with Dhoyani on Sunday at the conference hall of the organization hosting the Omani delegation headed by the latter.
Addressing the meeting, Salahi expressed Iran’s preparedness to cooperate with Oman on digitalization and indexing and categorizing documents from Omani archives.
He stated that Iran’s National Library is currently working on standards of archiving, and added, “We are working on several books on standards of archiving. Two volumes of the titles were presented at an Indian exhibit and sparked a lot of interest among visitors.â€
He further underscored the need for digitalizing archives, and said, “We will be faced with difficulties when disseminating information about our archives and preserving them unless we get to scan and digitalize them as soon as possible.â€
He went on to say that Iran has so far arranged document repairing and mending courses for 10 countries, and posited that the National Library’s website is ready to provide answers to all questions asked by Omani researchers in this regard.
Elsewhere in his statements, Salahi underlined the nature of the Archives section of the National Library and Archives Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and said that the section is independent of the library and is being managed by a board of trustees unlike many other countries where their national library and archive centers are being managed by the same board.
As he said, the organization is a governmental association to offer services to researchers.
For his part, Dhoyani expressed hope that the researchers in the two countries will enjoy such mutual cooperation and visits and that more festivals conferences will be arranged by the nations.
The National Library and Archives Organization works 22 hours a day and is 3 days off a year indicating Iran’s great interest for development of culture and research.
Over 34,000 scanned manuscripts are uploaded to the organization’s website. The online services of the popular website are available on cell phones to be even more user-friendly.
As many as 700 million document pages and 185 archived documents pages are being kept at Iran’s National Library.
