Tomball resident recognized by Gov. Rick Perry

Tomball resident Linda Guyon Hughes, State Vice-Chairman of the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution's Service for Veterans, Oral History Project, was awarded a Proclamation signed by Governor Rick Perry during the TSDAR 113th Conference held in San Antonio, Texas, in March. The Proclamation was presented to Hughes by the State Chairman for the TSDAR Service for Veterans, Cheryl "Sissie" Kipp, member of the Lady Washington Chapter, NSDAR in Houston, Texas and Janisue Rigel, member of the Margaret Montgomery Chapter, NSDAR, in Montgomery, Texas.
Hughes, a member of the Joanna Troutman Chapter, NSDAR, in Magnolia, Texas, was recognized for her three years of working closely with the Library of Congress on the Veterans History Project. The project is a collection of recorded oral histories given by veterans who describe their wartime experiences. Recordings are preserved at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and copies are given to the veterans as well.
According to Hughes, NSDAR began working with the Library of Congress 12 years ago as one of many volunteer organizations who help interview and record the veterans' histories. She states that the Greater Houston Area has more veterans than anywhere in the United States. Hughes holds workshops for the TSDAR chapter members interested in learning the guidelines for the interviews and recordings. Hughes states that the goal of NSDAR is to promote patriotism, historic preservation and education. She feels that by working with this project, she and other NSDAR volunteers enhance that mission. Hughes emphasizes that this project ensures that all veterans shall never be forgotten for their service to our country.
