Our Story Inc. keeps local history alive

Our Story Inc. has chosen “What a Time” as its theme for 2012. During the past two years, Our Story has sought to tell the history of Northern Nevadans whose history is rarely shared through community programs, oral history interviews and lesson plans.
In January, it held Red Tail Appreciation, which included a two-day visit of several Tuskegee Airmen who brought out 400 people to the Air National Guard base to meet the men from the World War II African-American pursuit squadron.
Students, parents, educators, community officials, military families and history seekers shared the event with the airmen.
Among Our Story’s endeavors:
Seeking out local history through individual and family stories told through personal photos and papers, such as the history of the Black Springs community.
In collaboration with other organizations, creating a monthlong event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1910 Jack Johnson-Jim Jeffries prize fight staged in 1910 in Reno. Johnson become the first African-American heavyweight champion. The At the Sound of the Bell project brought together boxing enthusiasts, authors, history seekers and relatives of the fighters.
A second-edition map highlighting historic sites in the Reno/Sparks area, such as Beckwourth Pass, founded in the 1800s by African-American guide Jim Beckwourth.
An annual exhibit at the Legislature in Carson City in February, sharing stories of unsung Nevada heroes.
Our Story Inc. strives to seek out, preserve and exhibit the heritage, culture, contributions and accomplishments of the unsung heroes in Northern Nevada through the Internet, lesson plans for educators, sharing unsung historic events, history videos and oral history.
The organization is seeking donations of $10, $20 or $30 to cover costs for a website, storage, display, printing and administrative costs. Donations can be directed to Our Story Inc., P. O. Box 34292, Reno NV 89533.
