They Should Return to Life

In the late of 1979, in a meeting with police officers, Imam Khomeini made very important remarks on the revival of police stations[1]. This issue was bitter for me who had heard about the crimes of some of them on the eve of the victory of revolution and afterwards. The problem of handing weapons to them was not only unpleasant to me, but also difficult to accept. I could not accept that the people in police stations would make the city safe so I tried to deny. To get rid of my confused thoughts, I visited ayatollah Madani and asked, ‘Sir, you say that Imam has ordered us to hand over the weapons to the same guards who were killing our children until yesterday?!’ Ayatollah Madani said, "You can easily visit Imam, so go and ask him the philosophy of his command, and see what your duty is."

I visited Imam Khomeini every month to give report of performance and to get permission for doing some works and activities, and if I found an opportunity, I would tell some incidents in details. And I would speak of straits and problems. And Imam Khomeini guided and helped me.

The next time when I visited Imam, after giving my report, I said something while I was mumbling, but I did not dare to speak about police stations issue openly. Imam noticed and asked, "What’s the matter sister Tahereh?" I said, "Frankly, it’s not easy for me to say. It’s about your command about police stations. How we can be at ease of mind by giving weapons to them; these are the ones who were killing our children until yesterday and many mothers are bereaved of their acts; now we should go and tell them thank you, there you go, this is your gun!"

With such an awe-inspiring, Imam Khomeini threw a sharp glance at me that I could not say anything else. "If you were imprisoned," he said, "if you were tortured, if you were exiled and suffered being away from your children and whatever happened to you, but you had and have the privilege of easily choosing spouse for your daughters and sons; but they were so misfortune that for making a living they did not have allow to choose their bride and groom and SAVAK should choose for them. Why you are now preventing them to return to the life, to take responsibility. Tell me how much do you help them? How many training courses do you hold for them? How much did you teach them during the time they were prevented from working...?"

Imam's sharp answer shook me. All those imaginary thoughts that I had in mind, disappeared. As if cold water was poured on the fire flared up inside me. My forehead was in sweat and I was ashamed of my boldness to ask such questions...

When Imam spoke about these deep and delicate matters, I was looking down. And at the end Imam said, "So, go and do your duty."

Imam’s holistic encounters drove me deep in thought and I realized there is a long way for understanding the nature of his behavior and words, and I learned that Imam did not do anything without philosophy. When I returned to Hamadan, I felt a heavy burden of responsibility on my shoulder, and I saw myself more exposed to the God's experiments, which needed more knowledge and alertness to pass. Arriving at Hamedan, I immediately held a meeting with brothers and ayatollah Madani to discuss about the ways of initiating police stations. The presence of ayatollah Madani was worthwhile and solved many of our problems.

The police officers were called to serve. The weapon was delivered to them and registered. Two-hour weekly meetings were held in one of the Hamedan's halls for some of them. In these classes the interpretation of Quran and morality were taught. And in this way, police officers also returned to the community.

To be continued…

[1].  On November 12th 1979, Imam Khomeini met with the staff of Tehran police station-21 in Qom. "In the name of God, brothers! Young people who are today among the military forces of Islam, I should thank all of you. And I hope that your services are accepted by God, and to be successful in making Iran in order to be favorable for Islam. If we worked in the Taghut time, or if you worked that period, it does not harm Islam; because it was done in the era of Taghut. But today, when we are in the Islamic regime, and you are Islamic forces, you work in an Islamic police station, if we make mistakes, it will be recorded in the name of Islamic Republic. And those, who are opposed to this movement, are seeking to see our mistakes, your mistakes, and put them down to the Islamic Republic’s account. And with a fuss, they sabotaged in the Islamic Republic; so, nowadays our duty - divine duty - is heavy. The duty is that we all united and like brothers, to end the way until now we have covered, without you want to impose yourself on the nation and to rule it, and without the nation wants to sabotage. I promise you, brothers, if we together reach the point in which the content of Islam execute everywhere in this country, it will lead to trust in nation, in country, in everything of the country, which is the culmination of all good things. If man has all the pleasures, but does not have any trust, be shaky, all those pleasures get bitter. Suppose you sit in a ship and all pleasures are available for you; as soon as the ship shakes and there is the possibility of drowning, you do not feel happy anymore and everything get bitter. If a state is shaky, if there is a fear of being caught by America, if there is a scary of being caught by other superpowers, if there is not any trust in our heart, if there is not any independence in our soul, if we do not rise up for ourselves, these pleasures have no longer taste. And if we assure that we are independent, we are only ourselves and do not have any guardian, and if we do not have any fear that they will attack us one time or they will sabotage in our work, this confidence is the best thing for human and I promise you, God willing, this will happen soon. Do not have any fear that those who betrayed the nation will return. There is no way for their return. And do not be afraid that these powers which plundered in this country, stole and took and wasted the property of this nation, and the nation itself has encountered with chaos and lack of organization , they will return. Do not scare, and step in this way strongly. What I have to say to you is that the centers which are in the hand of everyone; such as governmental centers, military centers, gendarmerie centers, your centers, all of them should be safety centers for people who enter them. You know that in the past if a person has wanted to enter the police station, how much he/she has been in trouble. These mental problems led to some complexes which have been remedied after that regime. It is long before these complexes disappear. This should be done by your encounters with people, your behavior, by accepting people and knowing yourself as people. This is the situation right now. You see that now, when you go among people, they treat you with cheerfulness and affection; they shout slogans for you and the army. And this is the best thing for a nation and maintains its independence; all should be united. The nation should not see itself separate from you and the police; and the police should not see itself separate from the nation. These separations cause instability. The more you integrate, the greater safety and confidence you gain, and you will success sooner. I hope that we all know our duty. And we all feel that we are living in a country in which all are brothers. God willing, you will be successful and healthy. (Sahifeh Imam, volume 11, pp. 42 44)

Attack on Halabcheh narrated

With wet saliva, we are having the lunch which that loving Isfahani man gave us from the back of his van when he said goodbye in the city entrance. Adaspolo [lentils with rice] with yoghurt! We were just started having it when the plane dives, we go down and shelter behind the runnel, and a few moments later, when the plane raises up, we also raise our heads, and while eating, we see the high sides ...

The Arab People Committee

Another event that happened in Khuzestan Province and I followed up was the Arab People Committee. One day, we were informed that the Arabs had set up a committee special for themselves. At that time, I had less information about the Arab People , but knew well that dividing the people into Arab and non-Arab was a harmful measure.

Is oral history the words of people who have not been seen?

Some are of the view that oral history is useful because it is the words of people who have not been seen. It is meant by people who have not been seen, those who have not had any title or position. If we look at oral history from this point of view, it will be objected why the oral memories of famous people such as revolutionary leaders or war commanders are compiled.
